It is with saddened heart I report that GM Roland Dantes of Modern Arnis has passed away yesterday. The Filipino Martial Arts community has lost another icon :-(
Roland Dantes was an actor and Filipino martial artist who trained in Modern Arnis with Remy Presas for over 30 years.
He has also trained with other martial arts masters, such as Cacoy Canete/Doce Pares and Edgar Sulite/Lameco Eskrima. He worked several years as a police officer before becoming an actor.
He was one of the best-known Philippine actors. He has had leading roles in different films including "The Pacific Connection" and "Arnis: The Sticks Of Death." In addition, Dantes was a bodybuilder who won the "Mr. Philippines" title five times between 1969-1980 and placed in competitions for the titles "Mr. Universe" and "Mr. World".
GM Dantes passed away yesterday March 16th 2009. He was 67.
I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family, friends and students of GM Roland Dantes as well as to the extended Modern Arnis family.

I have known Roland and his wife Cheryl for over 20yrs here in Melbourne,Australia,and las february 2009.just one month ago,I took Roland to my hometown in Lupon,Davao Oriental to trained the barangay police/tanod,and he was so happy that he was able to rest and sleep well away from the city lifestyle for a change. and he was looking forward to come back to lupon just to rest.my brother has his video during the training and my brother was the last person he chatted that night before he died. and I was so upset to the terrible News, and i just hope he is resting well in heaven.

Master Roland Dantes will definitely be Missed by many. I have never met him in person but have heard lots of stories through my Arnis teacher - Mataw Guro Louelle Lledo of Zikdokan Filipino Martial Arts and Amara Arkanis System. The were very good friends and in fact he was appointed by Mataw Guro Lou in December 2008 to be the President of the Amara Arkanis Organization in the Philippines based in Indang,Cavite. Unfortunately it was short lived.
Just want to say thank you for all your contributions to the world and making people happy! You are an Inspiration! Salamat Po! RIP.
