MOVIES: MERANTAU (Silat movie)

Photobucket

In Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his “Merantau” a century’s old rites-of-passage to be carried out by the community’s young men that will see him leave the comforts of his idyllic farming village and make a name for himself in the bustling city of Jakarta. After a series of setbacks leave Yuda homeless and uncertain about his new future, a chance encounter results in him defending the orphaned Astri from becoming the latest victim of a European human trafficking ring led by the wildly psychotic, Ratger and his right-hand man Luc. With Ratger injured in the melee and seeking both his “merchandise” and bloody retribution, Yuda’s introduction to the city is a baptism of fire as he is forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit as all the pimps and gangsters that inhabit the night hound the streets chasing their every step. With escape seemingly beyond their grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged, jaw-dropping finale.

The trailer looks cool. It may have some kerambit and sarong/malong scenes from the looks of the trailer. *crosses fingers* I love the sarong/malong material.

My thanks to Guro Crafty Dog on the heads-up.

I'm glad you posted this one. Every time I tried, I would get messages about the html being wrong, but I'm not a whiz at code and couldn't get it fixed...lol. Looks good to me. There's also a Malaysian(?) silat film out there...I'll see if I can't track it down again.

SB,

hmmm... not sure why that happened. i hit the "menu" button on that twitch page player, saw the option for "embed" and then hit "copy". then went to my blog entry and hit paste and voila.

ah cool... Silat and Ancient Thai bareknuckle a la Tony Jaa look cool on film.

TIA.

Yeah...I was doing the same thing...or so I thought. I ended up reaching max frustration point that day and gave up...lol.

Anyway...I just posted info on a couple of Malay silat films...one released awhile ago and another still in production. Check 'em out when you get a chance...

Malaysian silat film? Well there's plenty of that... but real cool fighting scenes somewhat akin to the Tony Jaa's genre, nope nada.

You might check out Puteri Gunung Ledang though, it has some decent fight scenes and a clip of it was shown in the Nat Geo's silat episode. Still isn't pure silat.
